What to Take

Jan. 15, 2009

I will not leave behind whatever brings me pleasure for viewing, holding or remembering. Photographs of friends, family and pets that span my lifetime, the body of artwork I have spent years creating, objects that remind me of people and places that have shared my life.

I will pack my mom’s teacups along with the memories they hold.  I will not forget the music box from my sisters, the blue and white vase from my dad, the box of cards collected through the years from my loving husband, the note he placed in my mailbox when we first met.

I will take the books that have helped to shape me, the hand- made greeting cards given by my step daughters when they were young, my mother-in-law’s letters, and my mother’s poems. These words and images will sustain me; they are not replaceable like the furniture that we will leave behind.
