The Willingness to Listen

Here’s Something To Feel Good About Today…

How well do you listen?

I thought I was a good listener until I realized that I actually screen out some of the words I prefer not to hear, including words of truth that may be painful to acknowledge. It’s easy for me to become defensive during a disagreement, to turn off and shut out the other person’s point of view. But not listening and shutting down will not serve anyone. Finding the willingness to listen, to acknowledge and to empathize will.

Learning to listen with your ears and with your heart is an art form. It takes conscious effort and a kind of self-assurance to step back and say nothing, just absorb and observe.

Successful communication depends upon compassionate and attentive listening. Your ability to truly listen may be one of the most important skills you can develop. Remember you don’t have to agree, you do need to hear what is being said and just acknowledge it to the other person.
