“I felt it shelter to speak to you.” Emily Dickinson

The best way to understand someone and to try and see the world through their eyes may be with our ears – by listening, really listening.

Like most people I often jump in too soon, interrupt or think about my response before the other person is finished speaking. In the end, I miss out on creating a deeper and more intimate connection.

When we interrupt, correct or criticize we don’t’ create a safe shelter for someone to open their heart to us. Maybe that’s the reason many people connect easily to strangers, their hairdresser or minister, because sadly enough they are more apt to listen without judgment than our loved ones are.

Listening is not only a way of showing respect; it’s an act of loving and honoring someone. It’s a way of connecting and bonding with them.

The next time someone speaks try taking a few deep breaths and listen deeply. When you want to talk with someone ask them to hear you out. If we all did this for each other our communication and compassion would grow and deepen.
