Take Personal Time Out To Relax
Here’s Something To Feel Good About Today!
How beautiful it is to do nothing, and then to rest afterward. ~Spanish Proverb
If you grew up in as I did, in an area exposed to harsh winter weather, then you will understand right away what I refer to as a “snow day.” For those who have never heard of this, think of playing hooky with absolutely no guilt.
Part of the thrill of having a “snow day” is the spontaneity that comes with it. Extreme weather forces the closing of all local schools and slows traffic to a standstill. Most important, it allows personal time out for whatever you choose, whenever you want it. You can sleep late, watch TV, curl up with a book, play games, make popcorn, watch a movie, or just hang out in your bath robe all day. The list of doing mindless, unplanned whatever you feel like, whenever you feel like it, is endless. A “snow day,” is your day, there are no rules, plans or agendas. Best of all, you don’t have to be sick to enjoy it!
As adults we tend to forget the simple bliss of having personal time out. We cram our vacations with so much doing that we need a vacation after our vacation. The reality is that you don’t have to wait for a “snow day,” a sick day, or a vacation day to claim and enjoy free time for yourself. “Snow days” are not luxuries, they are necessities, we are all deserving of.

For me, one of the great things about snow days was that there was the underlying sense of getting by with something. Sort of a cheap thrill! Seeing the name of one’s school run across the bottom of the TV screen in the list of closings was like a gift from the universe. A little conspiracy to let the kids of the community escape the classroom and wallow in a day of freedom. Of course we didn’t make the connection that teachers were even more excited about snow days than we were. After all, we might have missed out on a less than thrilling lecture or a pop quiz, but they were actually getting paid. Sweet!
