9.11 Tribute, Remember World Trade Center Heroes, Rick Rescorla
“We Can Find Something To Feel Good About Today, By Remembering The Heroes of September 11th.”
Where were you on September 11th, 2001? How did the events of that day change your life? Do You Know of Hero you can tell us about?
I had recently moved from NYC to NJ. Getting ready for an early morning hair appointment when a phone call informed me that my hairdresser would not be coming; he was stuck in NYC.
“What do you mean stuck,” I asked.
“Put on your TV, the World Trade Center has been hit by a plane!” the receptionist blurted.
Rushing to the television I couldn’t believe my eyes. I yelled for my husband Robert, to join me outside where we had an unobstructed vantage point from across the Hudson River. We watched the unimaginable! The sky billowed with a giant black cloud of smoke as the events continued to unfold. When it finally cleared, all that remained in the darkness were two giant streams of light where The Twin Towers had once stood.
While I did not lose anyone close to me that day, I felt as many of us did, a grief and sadness for all of humanity that still remains. I had worked for about 5yrs in the concourse level of the World Trade Center, had dined at Windows On The World restaurant, and had taken the elevators countless times. That these buildings could disappear in moments with so many lives lost was totally inconceivable. The worst part was that human beings could intentionally do this to their fellow men.
I will never forget the images surrounding September 11th and all the days that followed. The countless people posting images of missing loved ones, the hospitals ready to help victims that never came, the last minute phone calls to say a final “I love you.” A few days after, I was invited to a memorial service in NYC. When asked to raise your hand if you knew someone who had perished that day, about 75 percent of the people raised their hands. When asked if you knew someone who knew someone, 100 percent of us had our hands up.
September 11th, forever changed the course of the rest of my life; financially, emotionally and spiritually I would never be the same. If there is anything to feel good about regarding the horrific events it may be that there were countless heroes who risked and lost their lives so that others might live. When Sept. 11th comes around every year I remember them and pay tribute to their goodness, courage and strength. I remind myself that while there are people creating evil acts in the world, there are also amazing heroes that we can look up to and be proud of. They are and will always remain shining examples of tremendous hope that will live on.

One unsung hero was the World Trade Center security chief for the financial services firm Morgan Stanley. Rick Rescorla anticipated an air attack on the Twin Towers and did all that was humanly possible to save lives before and after the attack. He is a great example that one person can make a positive impact. Because of his courage, and fortitude many lives were saved.
