Best Friends, Stand By Each Other
Here’s Something New to Feel Good About Today!
“Lean on me, when you’re not strong, and I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on, for it won’t be long,’til I’m going to need somebody to lean on.”
- “Lean On Me”
What are relationships for if not to share the good times and to help each other out during the hard times. If you have a spouse or significant other, make a Comment and share with me the story of how that special person became your best friend. Are they someone you can depend upon in the tough times, someone you want to be with in the best of times and the person you can always lean on?
My husband Robert, is my best friend. When we met I remember thinking he’s not my “type.” Now after twenty years together, I know what it means to stand by someone no matter what.
In 1999 and for the next four years, Robert and I experienced a total of nineteen losses. Beloved people and pets passed on, while at the same time we both lost our careers. I helped him get through major back surgery and struggles with his two teen aged daughters. He supported me financially and emotionally when my once successful career fizzled.
But it was when my parents died within eight months of each other that I really knew that Robert was there for me. He stayed with me in what had been their home, stood with me at their gravesides, and even washed my hair and tucked me into bed when I was totally distraught.
Despite all the tears there has also been much laughter. Robert always manages to find the joy and silliness in situations. He never fails to surprise me with gifts, small gestures to tell me how much he cares. Most of all he believes in me, appreciates me and always tells me how much he loves me. I can tell Robert anything, and no matter what, I know it will always be OK. I never really understood this kind of love. Robert always sees the best in me and because he does, I believe more in myself.
Time tests all friendships. Many disappear while others will be there for the long haul. If you are lucky enough to marry your best friend, consider yourself truly blessed and be grateful….I know I am to have Robert.
