My Greatest Love Lesson

My Greatest Love Lesson

Here’s Something New to Feel Good About Today!

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”
Lao Tzu

Relationships are our greatest teachers, especially those that break open our hearts. Who was the first love of your life and what valuable lesson did you learn through loving them? I’d be really interested to hear your story , please make a Comment below and tell me all about it.

When I was sixteen I met a seventeen year old boy on Spring vacation in Miami, Florida. It didn’t matter that I lived in Boston and he in Brooklyn, we carried on a long distance relationship via telephone and traveling that lasted close to five years.

While we both had other relationships in between, I was so crazy about my first love that whenever he came around I would dump anyone else just to be with him. It was as if I had fallen under a spell and I had no control over my emotions.

I went so far as to send him a greeting card everyday for an entire year. I kept his photos, read and reread his letters and savored every gift he gave me. My mom thought my bedroom looked like a shrine and warned me to be careful not to lose too much of myself in any relationship. But it was too late, at sixteen I was already lost before I ever had the chance to know myself or understand what real love was.

My first love was based on infatuation. I was swept away by the intensity and drama of a long distance romance. When my heart was broken, it took me years to reclaim it. Looking back I can see my mom was right. I had given my heart without first knowing myself or seeing clearly who I was giving it to.

I learned the hard way that real love is safe and warm. It empowers me, makes me a happier, better and stronger person than before. If it does anything less, then it’s not real and not right for me.

What lesson did you learn from your first love and how did it change you? Make a Comment about my story or tell me yours.
