Words, The Power To Hurt OR Heal
“Here’s Something New To Feel Good About Today!”
“Words have the power to destroy or heal. When words are true and kind, they can change the world.” Bhudda
Do you choose your words wisely? You might want to think twice before you write or speak. Whether spoken in anger or joyful appreciation, your words hold tremendous power. They can cut deeply leaving lasting scars or they can mend a rift and offer comfort and encouragement.
In a local shoe shop today, I overheard a young mother speaking to her two young daughters. Perhaps she was having a stress day, I told myself, but I cringed when I heard her words. I watched in silence as the girls faces changed instantly from happily smiling to frustration and sadness.
“What are you doing she yelled, can’t you make a decision?” “You are ridiculous!”
Her words brought back painful memories of times when similar things had been said to me. Words like, “Make up your mind, can’t you ever make a decision?” Even worse,” Why do you ask stupid questions.”
People say all kinds of things to each other, without thinking and without the intention of hurting, but the effects are still the same. Wounds that don’t heal, leaving underlying scars that always remain sore spots. Painful phrases remain until we unearth them and at some later point hold them up to the light for healing.
On the other hand, the kindest words will uplift, motivate and inspire us. Words of appreciation and expressions of loving kindness build self-esteem and instill confidence.
Share a time in your life when words played a powerful role in how you felt? Let’s remind each other to always speak with mutual respect and great care. Words can build a loving, trusting relationship or they can whittle away at it’s foundation.
